EQUIPMENT CHECK LISTS
--What to look for in ice rescue equipment--

First priority in specialized ice rescue equipment is the safety of the rescuer. Special notice must be taken to insure the equipment meets USCG or prudent standards of safety. Equipment must also be durable, identifiable and accessible for rescue usage. Most manufacturers meet this spec already.

Ice rescue equipment should be deployed to address a specific need; and there are really only four (4) needs in ice rescue.

1. Buoyancy for the rescuer and support staff
2. Thermal protection for all
3. A means of securing the victim
4. Retrieval for both the rescuer and victim

Here's a chart that we've made up to help departments determine their outfitting needs for ice rescue.
